Our mission:
The European Piano Academy (EPA) was founded by professional pianist and teacher Illya Zozulya with the aim of bringing the best traditions of European and Russian piano teaching methods to Australian students.
All teachers working with EPA are trained and skilled to apply the piano teaching methods of the Russian and European piano schools.
At EPA we focus on emotional and mental aspects of performance, while making our students technically sound in the art of playing the piano. We help students to pursue their goals, with many of them securing music scholarships in some of the best music schools in Sydney. We also prepare students for important examinations like High School Certificate exams, Grades 1-8 Piano exams, Amus, Lmus, “Piano for Leisure” exams and prepare them for Musicianship/theory assessment exams for the Australian Music Examinations Board. With realistic goals being set based on each student’s individual abilities and current level of progress.
About Illya Zozulya, Founder and Director of the European Piano Academy:
Illya’s story…
Born in Ukraine, Illya studied at the selective Kharkov Special Secondary Music School for Gifted Children with renowned teacher Professor Victor Makarov. Victor Makarov was a student of Regina Horowitz, the sister of famed pianist Vladimir Horowitz. Illya completed his Bachelor’s Degree majoring in Piano Performance at the Australian Institute of Music after arriving in Australia in 1998.
He has won a number of competitions and scholarships and has performed in major venues in Ukraine and Australia including the Sydney Town Hall, Sydney Government and Parliament Houses, Kiev Philharmonic Hall, and Zaporozhye Philharmonie Concert Hall.
In 2002, he was granted a Distinguished Talent Permanent Residency Visa. His permanent move here was endorsed by some of the Australia’s most prominent musicians and by the former Prime Minister.
Illya has taught at the Australian Institute of Music for almost a decade and established his own European Piano Studio on the upper north shore of Sydney in 2012.
His students have enjoyed impressive results in AMEB exams, High School certificate exams, competitions and have received various scholarships.
Illya’s Vision:
Technique, Mind, Heart & Soul; these terms resonate in Illya’s philosophy, his musical outlook and his teaching methodology. When he first came up with the idea of the European Piano Academy, Illya Zozulya’s aim was simple – to make European and Russian piano teaching methods available to more Australian students and to help students accomplish a high degree of proficiency while having fun in the process. His diverse system of teaching focuses mainly on the technical, mental as well as emotional aspects of piano playing. Because of his background, Illya is able to impart the best attributes of the European and Russian piano school traditions.
‘I see my students as unique individuals with different needs. To be able to speak the language of music fluently and unobstructed, I guide my students to master their technical, mental and emotional skills’. Illya
